Inaugural Collection 2015:
This collection was truly from my heart and soul. It was my first collection y’all – I didn’t know what the heck to do first as I had so much to say and so many designs to put out there, yo! I just knew the whole wide world would eat it up in one day lol.
My inspiration was the New York City’s social lights from the 1940s and 50s mix with 1970s soul funk bands! From pattern-making, draping to trim sourcing, I was involved in the entire process it took to make this collection perfect.
As a kid from Jersey spending years buying/wearing fashion from every designer on the planet to working backstage during fashion weeks; it was only right to present my first collection during New York Fashion Week – which we did in September 2015. Our show was very intimate…it was held at a boutique hotel here in New York and the guest list was very industry-based with a lot of friends and family in attendance.
Believe it or not, I wasn’t really nervous or anything like that leading up to the show but it was a lot to take in because the business side of the business kept creeping up – which is tough for designers because a lot of times you just wanna design, show your collection and that’s it. Yet instead you have to meet with the press, meet with photographers, meet with your digital team to making sure catering has been delivered, the hotel is sending your guest upstairs and blah blah blah lol.
All that said, I must say the entire process was truly incredible. The models in the show were models that I met along the way. And they helped with the start of our photo shoot campaigns from there they agreed to participate in the show and we’ve made friends every sense (even if we don’t see each other all the time or stay in touch like we should they are still so so close to my heart forever).
Plus my team that I also met along the way were so supportive, and so positive. They were so respectful of my work from the start which made it really easy to put the collection out there. A lot of times you’re nervous and you don’t know how the world is going to perceive your thing but when that support from your team is so natural, you feel more comfortable putting it out there – and that’s exactly what we did. I am so rooting for everyone on my team and everything that they do in life, I’m like a fan yo!
As an independent designer based out of New York City, there was also the business side of my fashion label I had to develop in concert with the beautiful clothing, products and services. This as you can imagine was also a challenge from every step of the way. The major challenge early on was creating infrastructure to run a fashion business – we needed the infrastructure (something I thought could take 24 hours lol) but it takes time.
It took me a lot of time to build the infrastructure needed for managing production, developing sales initiatives, growing our engagement to seeking out new opportunities. All of this and more is needed within my own design house in order to run point on my own designs in an industry that can be very [you know what] lol! I must say, the key ingredients to this ongoing process was patients (the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset (ouch lol) – exercising patience and continuous learning are what brings this all together.
Like I said – this was definitely the start of something special to me and we’re keeping it going; you’ll see as you discover more of our collections….
